The 1984 Honda ATC250R

HOME

The Honda 2nd generation ATC250R. While it is no water-cooled 250R, she still runs strong. Acquired on August 22, 2006 - she proves to be a super nice condition Air Fooler. The tank is in immaculate condition. No signs of rust or dents anywhere. The seat and fenders , all OEM, are pretty nice as well. It runs real good. It needs a few things at this point. Among those are: attention to the front and rear brakes, axle bearings, and yes, the dreaded froze up swing arm bolt and bearings. It looks like it has been ridden around with the nut off the swingarm bolt for a while. Long enough for some body to slap some paint on the frame and the bolt with no nut. Also - it looks like there are some rear shock issues - the linkage has a bolt 1/2 out , and the rear shock is blown. Other than that this machine is a complete last year air cooler.
This was my race bike in the 2007 season and it proved to be a good performer. Since I have taken the intake all back to stock and will run it as a trail bike / back-up MXer.
Sunday, October 22, 2006 - the Rebuild is finished and I took my 1st ride. The full rebuild included:

The ATC250R was introduced in 1981 and took the race scene by suprise. Prior to 1981, racing trikes consisted of aftermarket frames with full suspension and hopped up 185cc and 200cc ATC engines installed. The new 2-Stroke power plant and Honda's highly engineered race chassis was a real eye opener for the racers of yesteryear. The ATC250R was made between 1981 and 1986 and in 3 different models - 1st generation (81 & 82) 2nd generation (83 & 84) and 3rd generation (85 & 86). The 2nd generation ATC250R was a completely different machine than the first generation. 2nd generation 250Rs were made in 1983 and 1984. The frame was larger and could accomodate a larger rider. The suspension upgrades were huge with longer travel and more geared towards racing MX. The front end got the newer style "skinny" front tire over the old 22X11X8 sized tire. The gas tank got "air scoops" added for additional cooling effects. New style lighting and ingnition controls were also added. It was really a huge step up in the race circuit from the 1st generation 250Rs.

A Few Photos The Teardown begins - 9-30-06

October 22, 2006 - NEARLY DONE!!!

She is done and I have raced this trike in a few MX races this year. It runs super strong and holds it's own against the water cooled 250Rs
