The 1984 Honda ATC200ES
HOME
This is Shelly's 1984 Big Red. Shelly aquired this trike in an odd way. A friend (Dirtface - from 3WW) was looking for a decent
200ES gas tank. We knew of a 200ES sitting locally in the tall weeds beside a dumpster with a gas tank. It had been sitting there
for as long as I can remember. It was in really sad shape but for what Doug needed, it was fine
. Shelly contacted the owner and it was a package deal - the
dumpster machine and a beat up - non-maintaned machine being the same make and model. It was almost too "OK" not to restore.
Ever since Shelly's Dad got his 84 Big Red, she took a real liking to them - and has expressed she would like one.
Well, this was a good candidate.
It did need alot of TLC. The wiring was a worse mess than I had ever seen - wires melted together, wires to extra lights
all over it - it was just a mess. And the rear end was just as bad - we completely rebuild the rear end with all Honda OEM
bearing and seals - which in fact cost more to do than to buy the whole machine! Shelly painted the gas tank, and had the seat
recovered by Tammy and Rob Mosher Cosmic Quads . She 100% disassembled the machine and sandblasted every part imaginable. Then painted
them to her taste. Then came the reassembly. Just like clockwork, during the re-assebmly process, Shelly got an ATV lift
from her parents for Christmas. That made re-assambly really nice.
Shelly completed this project on February 4th, 2007 (Superbowl Sunday Bears Vs Colts). It is a really nice trike. It features a
nice set of heated hand grips (also a christmas gift).
Yet another Fine Restoration done by Tionesta Trikes!
New for the 1984 line up - Honda introduced the 2nd generation Big Red. It's new features included shaft drive
(upgraded
from the 1982 and 1983 chain drive) and a reverse gear.
Other than the drive train, the 1984 model did not look much different
than the 1st generation Big Reds. Obviously the frame was different than the 1st generation Big Reds to accomodate
for the rear shaft drive. Fenders, gas tank, racks and many other parts interchanged with the 1st generation Big Reds -
however, the 1984 Big Red was a "one year" production run vehicle. On a side note, the 1984 and 1985 ATC200M also
share the same rear fenders.
