The 1986 Honda ATC200X

HOME

This is my 1986 ATC200X. This was the only Honda 3 wheeler ever made with a square tube frame rather than the traditional round tubing. At first glance, the stylish fenders look like that of a fairly new ATV. I believe that if the CPSC would not have stepped in, this is the style the majority of the trikes would have gone. Kind of a look into the future of ATCs if you will. The OEM plastics are pretty good shape and not cracked, . I got a used gas tank that I repainted and creemed. I also got a new swing arm and shock, because someone welded a 1985 dogbone to this swingarm to make the 1985 shock fit this 1986 model.

The ATC200X was made between 1983 and 1987. There are 2 generations of the 200X. The 1st generation was between 1983 and 1985. The only big difference in 1st generation models was the rear swingarm in the 1983 model. It was made of round tubing welded together. The 1983 swingarm looks really trick compared to any other stock swingarm of it's time. Honda probably changed that design due to the cost factor. The 1984 and 1985 models had the square tubing rear swing arm like most modern ATV's have. The first generation 200Xs had red fenders with white gas tanks. The 1983 and 1984 had black seats and the 1985 had a blue seat. . In 1986 the 200X was completely redesigned with virtually no parts being the same as the 1st generation. The 86 & 87 models have all square tubing frames rather than the round tubing frames. The engine was completely redesigned as were the fenders, the seat, the gas tank, the headlight components, - EVERYTHING! The 86 and 87 models also came with a 6 speed tranny. The 1986 and 1987 models were all white with blue seats. The 86 had red air scoops and the 87 had white air scoops.

The work began in November 06 and was finished on February 3, 2007 - with it's first ride out in the snow. This bike is so tight - I love the way it feels and handles. It is so small and light, flicking it around the tight woods trails will be a blast. The seat cover on this machine was custom made by Tammy & Rob Mosher - they do great work. They can be found at Cosmic Quads

The end result pictures - this was a great little project - mainly it was cometic other that the rear suspension components.
